 Specimen Requirements

1. Special tubes containing EGTA and reduced gluthathione as preservatives must be used for all samples. They are obtained form the Nephrology lab.

2. These tubes do not contain a vaccum. Samples are collected with a syringe and the blood immediately transferred to pre-chilled tubes containing special preservative.

3. Samples are collected by the IV nurse.

4. Patient must be resting for 1 hour in a quiet area prior to the sample being taken.

5. Indwelling catheter is inserted on hour before the sample is taken.

6. Collect blood from the intra catheter line with a syringe. Transfer to pre-chilled special EGTA tubes.

7. Samples are brought to the lab on ice.

8. Samples are centrifuged in a refrigerated centrifuge and the plasma frozen as soon as possible until ready to assay.

Ship frozen plasma on dry ice.

9. Caution thawing and refreezing sample will lower the levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine in the sample.
