Research Ethics Committee (REC)
The BCHS Research Ethics Committee (REC) operates under the principles of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS). Its purpose is to review research studies, monitor, provide guidance and policy development on issues relating to research in clinical and patient care.
All research projects involving BCHS physicians, staff (including staff acting as investigators outside the Institution), students (i.e., research within the institution or using institutional resources), or patients, must obtain ethical approval from the BCHS Research Ethics Committee, Ethics Committee of the Board and Board of Directors before research can begin. The REC is responsible, on behalf of the institution, for ensuring that all research involving human subjects under the auspices of its institutions meet current ethical standards.
The BCHS REC reviews and recommends approval by the Ethics Committee and the Board of Directors, of research projects that meet acceptable ethical and scientific standards and for which adequate facilities and resources are available. The BCHS REC also provides advice on the ethical, scientific and technical aspects of planning research projects.
Ethics Committee of the Board
The BCHS Ethics Committee is a standing committee of the Board of Directors. It is committed to protecting research participants by ensuring all research involving humans is both scientifically valid and ethically sound.
